I strive to make functional pottery that performs well, pleases the eye and is a delight to touch and hold on a daily basis. I believe that spouts must really pour, plates stack and mugs conform comfortably to the hand and mouth. I am partial to bowls, for large or small they convey a sense of completion. Inspiration comes from everywhere, and my work evolves through a deliberate and practiced openness to new experiences. Studying pottery in museums, galleries, books and even on the Internet has helped my critical skills. Travel, especially repeated trips to Japan, has lent subtlety to my work and refined it. While most of my work is unadorned, I have discovered the joy of a single decorative element, whether it is the whimsy of a painted primitive chicken or the sophisticated lines of an impressed ginko leaf. My work is stoneware, fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln. It is oven, dishwasher and microwave safe and is completely lead free. Every piece I create bears my personal vision, and it is my hope that those who touch, hold and use my pottery experience something of a kinship with its maker.
